From a post by Paul Allen on an open source firm getting funding:
Momentum is building for open source. It's a super efficient model. As more code becomes available for free, companies can focus on unique value add, rather than re-inventing software that has already been written ten thousand times. In the end, businesses and consumers benefit the most from open source.
