CyadorLocation

The maps of Candar are all from the same period. I haven't found a map of the Cyador-period, so I'm writing down my guesswork here.

Some things are clear.

  • It's roughly the western half of Candar.
  • The grass hills are the border (after Nylan's little action they show up as stone hills on the map).
  • Biehl is a border town (though I suspect it's drawn on the wrong side of the river, see scion of cydor).
  • The accursed forest was contained in a 90x90kay diamond shaped area somewhere in the region which is now (at map-time) covered by the forest.

Some extra hints

  • A load of east/west/north/south remarks in both cyador books, didn't sort them out yet.
  • Fenard is supposedly called after Fenardre the Great who drove back the legions of the west (told to Creslin in towers of the sunset by his first trader boss' guard). That's Gallos. And before the trouble with Jenred, Gallos included Kyphrien, so it stretched all the way to the south coast. My guess is that what's desert in Kyprien was in fact part of cyador, ploughed under by Nylan. There's a reference (in the white order?) that the rationalists landed in that western part of Kyprien, so they've probably held on to that territory.
  • The line Biehl - stone hills - kyphien dessert is awfully straight. There's a bit of a possible bulge near those copper mines in southern Lornth, but still.

So, abovementioned line is what I take for being Cyador's outer boundaries. That still leaves the problem of the location of Cyad, Fyrad, etc.

Cyad

  • There's no mention of a river or canal near Cyad, but it's got a sea port.
  • Southport is a decent guess. L.E. Modesitt said Southport was build on the same location as Cyad, so that nails it.

Fyrad

  • Fyrad is more than once associated with the engineers, almost sounding like engineer headquarters. Definitely also a sea port, but I thought it was also on the canal.
  • There's a river flowing in the forest on the map, so that's about the location of the Great Canal. It's not a bad guess to picture the canal about parallel to it.

All of the above positions Fyrad on the south coast somewhere near Diehl.

The forum I linked to above has L.E. Modesitt saying that it was located near Diehl, but inside the current great forest. No ruins left, as Fyrad was built on a delta, while Cyad was a hill city on a bay. The cataclysms generrated by Nylan's efforts and the accursed forest turned the delta to jelly, so to speak.

Miscellaneous

  • There are a north-south and an east-west highway. Not necessarily exactly N-S and E-W, but OK.
  • Fyrad is as good a guess as any for the southern starting point.
  • I can't exactly remember a crossroads, but more like a T-junction with the north-south one ending on the east-west highway.
  • The east-west one probably also included the "westwind" part of Candar, so it's pretty much located to the north of Cyador, consistent with above T-junction.
  • The western endpoint then is probably Summerdock (already existing then).
  • The eastern endpoint was near the stone hills somewhere.
