Eifelquerbahn (Vulkaneifelbahn)
Nice German railway in the Eifel. Gerolstein-Daun-Ulmen-Mayen.
I like railways. There's one track in Germany that somehow captured my attention: the eifelquerbahn, also called the "Vulkaneifelbahn". It runs from Gerolstein to Daun, Ulmen, Kaisersesch and Mayen. Part of the track is used again regularly after being closed down in 1991, the other part now sees summer touristic travel.
It started during a holiday in the early 1980s in Dockweiler, where that track near the camping site had a large attraction on me. Later in 1991 we camped in Ulmen (photos), just after the line had been closed for passenger trafic. There only was one irregular freight train left. That holiday I especially enjoyed spending more than half a day photographing and measuring the station of Uersfeld .
I visited the line again briefly during my honeymoon in 2000, when we were in the neighbourhood. I didn't expect there to be any trains, but I was glad to see regular trafic again on part of the line.
- I've started scanning in my photos from the eifelquerbahn .
- Hobby site about the eifelquerbahn
- German wikipedia entry
- There once ran a branch line from Daun towards the Mosel river: the Mosel-Maare-bahn It's a bicycle path now. The website gives a very nice overview of the line.
- Information about all lines in the Eifel
- For those who have google earth: I've got a work-in-progress Eifelquerbahn.kmz that has all the stations of the line. You can select the full sequence and have it play back as a fly-over movie. Pretty nice.
